A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: Gules, on a bezant a bomber, nose to base, Sable. Attached below and to the sides of the device a Gold scroll inscribed WE SWEEP THE SKY in Red letters.
The scarlet shield and the yellow disc charged with the diving bomber symbolize the artillery antiaircraft nature of the organization.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 517th Coast Artillery (Antiaircraft) Regiment on 7 April 1938. It was redesignated for the 78th Coast Artillery (AA) Regiment on 31 October 1940. It was redesignated for the 78th AAA Gun Battalion on 23 June 1949. The insignia was redesignated for the 78th Antiaircraft Artillery Missile Battalion on 19 June 1956. It was redesignated for the 517th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on 29 December 1958.

It was redesignated for the 78th Coast Artillery (AA) Regiment and amended to delete the crest on 2 November 1940. It was redesignated for the 78th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion on 23 June 1949. The insignia was redesignated for the 78th Antiaircraft Artillery Missile Battalion on 19 June 1956. It was redesignated for the 517th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on 29 December 1958.
